Writing

I write non-fiction and fiction, usually exploring themes of grief, illness, and resilience, often set against the realities of mountain landscapes.

My memoir, ‘I AM HERE: On Staying Alive’, about grief, collapse, recovery and big mountains will be published in the UK on 21st January 2027 by Chatto & Windus. It previously was named Runner Up for the Bridport Memoir Award 2024/5. You can read an extract of the prize-winning draft here.

I have a Creative Writing MFA from Birkbeck (2022), supervised by Toby Litt (also way back in 2007 a DPhil in English Literature from Oxford University).

I’ve had creative non-fiction published at: 3AM, MIR Online. I write about mountains and life on Substack under the title Beyond The Mountain. I’ve recently started a sub-Substack aimed specifically at writers. It’s called Exposure – A Journey In Publishing Memoir and charts my experience of this year leading up to publication.

For journalism samples, see: Runner’s World; The Alpine Club (and also in print in the 2024 and 2025 Alpine Club Journal); UKClimbing; in print in The Great Outdoors Magazine (June 2026).
